Can you goto Network adapters on the configuration page of ESXi in vSphere Client and check the status of vmnic1. Also you can run the command esxcfg-nics -l on ssh and check the status.

ESXi is secure enough but if you want to protect your VMs against any unauthorised access then recommend you to use vShield. http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vmware-vshield_br-en.pdf
